An extremely wide variety of tourist accommodation can be found in Galicia and Northern Spain. Visitor accommodation can be found to fit all tastes and even the choosiest customer will find something to suit their needs.

If you want something slightly different then most people would head for one of the various exclusive hotels throughout the region or one of the “Paradors” that can be found in various key places throughout the area. Good accommodation can be found also in some of the various mountain refuges where the stunning views complement the high standard of the accommodation but also for those looking for a beach holiday on a budget there are lots of campsites to be found in the coastal areas.

As expected the hotels in Galicia and Northern Spain are extremely spacious very clean and comfortable. Hotels are categorized and awarded stars by the regional tourist authorities. The local tourist Authority awards between one and five stars for each hotel and the status of the hotel can be found by looking at a blue plaque near the hotel door.

You can usually find en-suite bathrooms or at least a shower in each Hotel bedroom. Hostels and “Pensions” usually do not have en-suite facilities and have fewer comforts than hotels so as to be expected are slightly cheaper.

Don’t equate the number of stars on the outside door of the hotel to necessarily match the standards of the accommodation that is on offer and this is because in Spain the stars are allocated on the facilities on offer not necessarily the quality of the service. The more exclusive hotels offer all kinds of extra facilities, such as air conditioning, on-site parking, internet-access and rooms with televisions as well as facilities for the disabled.

It is advisable to plan in advance when you want to come to this area because as you would expect, prices and rates can vary on the season or time of year that you choose to visit. A popular option available in all of the autonomous regions of northern Spain are hostels (hostales) and guest houses (pensiones) which are cheaper than hotels. These are usually small family-run establishments offering just a few beds.

It is estimated that there are approximately 92,000 registered beds in this territory, described as “Green Spain” and there are in excess of 1500 hotels.

The largest hotel chains in the area are called Grupo Sol-Melia and NH. The standard of accommodation in these hotels is extremely high. Latterly there have been a growing number of smaller privately run hotels that offer memorable relaxing accommodation available.

In Spain they have dotted throughout the country a series of state run hotels that are known as Paradors. These are classified from between three to five stars. Spain’s first Parador opened in 1928 and now there is a wide network of them throughout the country. The idea behind the hotels when they were setup was that there should never be more than one day’s drive from one Parador to another. The best known Parador in the area is the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos in Santiago de Compostela and this is in a former royal hunting lodge. Other Paradors can be found in monasteries, castles and other monuments. You will quite often find that there are a growing number of purpose built Paradors and these can quite often be found in either towns of historic interest or areas of spectacular scenery.

A Parador might not necessarily be the best hotel in town, but it can be counted to deliver a predictably high level of comfort. The standard of each Parador is extremely consistent with comfortable and spacious bedrooms all furnished to the same high standard. Quite often you will find that they offer outstanding samples of regional cuisine. |If you plan to tour in high season or to stay in the smaller Paradors, it might be wise to reserve the room. Bookings can be made either using the Central de Reservas which is a centrally based service based in Madrid or you can contact each Parador direct. As with most areas if you travel in the high season you will find accommodation can be quite expensive but if you are able to shop around you can quite often find special deals available.

Doesn’t it seem like there’s always some kind of holiday approaching? Hopefully there’s a vacation to go along with that approaching holiday for most of us. It doesn’t matter how long you have until you leave, right now is still the best time to begin preparing for busy airports, long waits in lines, and all the other frustrations that go along with flying. How can you cut down on travel stress levels? Just get there early!

Getting there early may be the most important thing you can do while you’re traveling during the holiday season. However, there are certain exceptions at some airports in case you arrive late. In case you miss your flight because of a flat tire, a huge traffic jam, or you get in a car accident on the way to the airport, some airlines may let it slip by. You may be able to just catch the next flight and not even incur a fee. But don’t ever count on them doing it, because you they may or may not have an understanding attitude toward you.

Even if they do let you try and catch the next flight, you need to keep in mind that many, if not all, flights around the holiday travel time are going to be completely full. You may not be able to get on the “next flight” for quite a while. Car trouble can also be a major problem when you’re going to the airport. Since car trouble is considered by the airport as being your fault (and it essentially is), your airline is probably not going to want to go out of their way to help you out.

There’s one solution that will usually help you avoid all of the above situations: arrive early. Or at least leave your house early. If you leave early, you’ll have a good deal of leeway time just in case you run into trouble along the way. Also keep in mind that most airlines recommend that you check in at least 90 minutes early, or two hours early for international flights. But for holiday travel, you should definitely plan on arriving even earlier, because you’ll surely run into a good deal of long lines, so plan accordingly.

The best deals on flights are usually snapped up early so try and book as far in advance of your holiday as possible. Being flexible by considering alternative departure dates, times and airports can knock pounds off the price. Generally speaking, midweek flights are the cheapest as the demand is lower. Bringing your holiday forward or delaying your holiday by just a couple of days can sometimes make a huge deal of difference to the price you will pay. Also, the time of day you fly may affect the price. Flights departing very late at night are usually cheaper than those departing at more sociable hours. Consider alternative departure airports, for instance, if you live in the south east of England and would normally look to fly out of London Heathrow, consider departing from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or Southampton instead. Prices may be cheaper and it may be quicker to transit these airports to see if it is any cheaper. Once you have found the cheapest flight that meets your requirements book it as soon as possible. Don’t wait to see if the price will go down as they very rarely do. When booking be sure to enter names exactly as they appear on passports and read the booking terms and conditions carefully.

Choosing your accommodation: –
There are many holiday accommodation options available and you will need to decide whether you want an apartment or hotel, and whether you want some or all of your meals prepared for you or if you would rather cater for yourself. Self catering apartments are generally the cheapest option and offer the best value for money, but many will lack the facilities of hotels and the convenience of having meals included. Make sure you research the facilities available in the hotel or apartments you choose and don’t just rely on how many stars the accommodation has been awarded as the star system can be misleading and is not necessarily an indication of value for money. Also consider the location of the accommodation. Those further away from the centre of your chosen holiday resort will usually be cheaper. Consider accommodation just outside the centre of the holiday resort as this will save you money but not leave you isolated from the action.

Transfer: –
Once you have booked your flights and holiday accommodation you will want to think about how you will get from the airport to your hotel or apartment. You may wish to pre-book a bus transfer or a taxi directly to your holiday accommodation. Alternatively, for the greatest holiday freedom you can hire a car and drive yourself. If you are hiring a car you should compare holiday car hire prices online to be sure you are getting the best deal and pre-book whilst still in the UK as the prices will usually be lower than in the airport. Before driving away from the airport make sure you have purchased adequate insurance to cover you in the event of theft, damage or an accident.

As you can well imagine, it’s all too easy for Sunshine Coast locals to lose touch with what tourists think about the area, so we decided to go ahead and ask some Sunshine Coast holiday makers what they thought of the place, and if they felt that there was anything which could be improved on. John and Marjorie are a couple from the Midlands in the UK. Unfortunately they don’t live anywhere near the ocean, so of course they immediately fell in love with the Sunshine Coast and the splendid weather they get to enjoy during their holidays.

Ironically, the UK is currently experiencing one of the best summer’s they’ve had in a long time so obviously John and Marjorie felt that they were losing out to some extent, although of course they did admit to the fact that even though this year’s summer in the UK is quite pleasant, it’s certainly nothing like they’ve experienced on the Sunshine Coast. It seems as though for John, the biggest attraction was that he’s been able to wear a pair of shorts and a tee shirt everyday, and that he’s been able to enjoy swimming in the hotel pool and also in the sea. Even so, considering John and Marjorie have traveled to various places in Australia, what is it about the Sunshine Coast that keeps them coming back?

When we asked John, his reply was simply that the Sunshine Coast is exceptionally beautiful, and that there’s no shortage of things to do. John has fallen head over heels with the place largely because he’s able to go fishing whenever he wants, and when he’s not fishing, he can spend the day on one of the perfectly manicured golf courses. Also, both John and Marjorie have been very impressed with the Sunshine Coast accommodation where they’ve been staying during their holidays, and also the fact that there are so many local restaurants to choose from.

“I think John and I both like the idea of how easy it is for us to visit other interesting places when we’re here at the Sunshine Coast,” says Marjorie. “Obviously, for people like us who are only able to visit Australia every once in a while, there’s always a huge temptation to try and fit in as many stopovers as you can when you’re here. Of course, as you can imagine, such a hectic schedule can leave you feeling quite drained, and this is why the two of us prefer to stay in one place and then branch out from there. For example, when we stay at the Sunshine Coast it’s incredibly easy for us to take in other places, such as Brisbane and Fraser Island. Just last weekend we decided to go and see Stradbroke Island for example, and we liked it so much, that we ended up staying for a few days and even had an opportunity to do some whale watching. Hey, we’ve even sometimes taken advantage of cheap flights which one can often get at the Sunshine Coast Airport, and this has allowed us to also visit Sydney and Melbourne.”

Now that John and Marjorie are regular visitors to the sunshine coast, we asked them what advice they would give to other people intending traveling to the region.

“If you intend taking advantage of some wonderful Sunshine Coast accommodation, then you should make your booking online,” says Marjorie. “Like so many others, we usually make a point of checking through some reviews of past visitors simply because it helps to minimize the chances of being disappointed when you arrive. To be honest though, we’ve never yet been disappointed.”

“The best advice I could give, is to try the mouthwatering Morton Bay bugs” says John. “In fact, I’ve never been disappointed with any of the seafood I’ve eaten in the region. Marjorie and I have often commented on the fact that we’d previously always believed it was the English who invented good fish and chips.” Let’s face it; this is certainly one couple from the UK who have no doubt as to what they expect from a good Sunshine Coast holiday. “The only word of caution I have,” says John “is that you Australian drivers simply don’t know how to use your roundabouts properly!”
