If you have been holding off booking your summer holiday in the hope that prices will fall, then you won’t be disappointed. Many European and worldwide tour operators are beginning to reduce their prices in an attempt to persuade holidaymakers to pack their bags for a trip abroad. But, beware, because you may be in for a shock once you get to your destination. The pound has been massively devalued against both the dollar and the euro, meaning that prices abroad have rocketed. Holidaymakers flocking to popular destinations on the Spanish Costas, the Balearics and Portugal are finding that the cost of food and drink has risen dramatically in relative terms compared to last year. Not only have exchange rates had a negative impact but prices have been hiked even further as bar, cafe and restaurant owners abroad seek to ride the current economic crisis. In addition, the once dependable and almost certainly sunny continental weather is no longer guaranteed thanks in the main to global warming. However, it is the economic crisis that is at the heart of many Britons deliberating over whether to travel abroad or not. Recent research has found that personal finances will be the average Briton’s biggest worry during 2009; and as a result, almost 35 per cent of those questioned who would otherwise have booked a summer holiday in previous years have not done so in 2009. Indeed, many Britons are now seriously considering taking UK breaks instead of travelling abroad purely because of the worry and uncertainty over their finances, and who can blame them? There is a massive choice of diverse holidays in the UK; from the straightforward, such as a break in a seaside town for a couple of nights, right up to a long break away on an action-packed activity or specialist interest holiday. In comparison to flying abroad at summer, getting to most UK locations is relatively easy and takes significantly less time. Of course, although the weather cannot be guaranteed to be glorious during a British summer, thanks to global warming the same can also be said for a lot of popular European destinations! But, unlike flying abroad, taking UK breaks means you can spend more time in the abundance of indoor leisure facilities, move to a different location if you’ve exhausted all the entertainment options in one area or simply pack up and come home anytime you want. And, because there is such a diverse range of destinations to visit within the UK, the most difficult decision may be where to go for your needs.br
